Finding Peace and Healing in Nature

More and more I have been finding myself the most peaceful and relaxed when I am in nature - usually alone, but just being out underneath the great heavens, feeling the breezes across my skin, and reflecting on the many adventures that my daughter and I have had over the past few months, brings me joy, relief from stress, and hope.





The beauty and simplicity of Costa Rica not only helped me to relax and reconnect with my daughter after the long and rough journey to finally finishing my degree but enabled me to experience again the joy of simple living. Street vendors with delicious meat and fresh fruits and veggies, everyone either walking or bicycling everywhere, and a welcoming smile and hug regardless of where we visited. It was amazing to get away from technology, stress, and fast paced life in metropolitan American. 

On my journey to becoming Happier and Healthier, I attended the International Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah and thoroughly enjoyed the crisp cool mountain air, beautiful scenery, and the most welcoming and beautifully diverse group of entrepreneurs from around the globe. I learned so much and enjoyed learning - it was empowered and relaxing at the same time.






Now I have brought what learned home and spend time in my own home-made oasis, unwinding, relaxing and reflecting. I revel in the positives and analyze how the not so great can be improved or let go completely. Along with some other new changes in my life, reconnecting with nature has been extremely beneficial not only in moderating my stress and pain levels, but has boosted my weight loss results, and improved how well I sleep at night.






Finding ways to relax and reconnect with nature do not need to be fancy or require expensive trips to your dream vacation place. I brought the beach and tropics to my home with a few cans of paint in soft, relaxing colors in the bathroom and on the porch. The torches make sitting out after dark even more soothing as the natural form of light allows my brain to wind down while enjoying the sounds of cooling fall nights.

Get back to nature, relax, and breath in fresh renewal. Release that stress to the wind and see how many aspects of your life improve. You wont regret it - I promise.

Fibro and Family (new recipe!)

Ok, I have a HUGE family (5 brothers and 2 sisters, plus 2 sister-in-laws, and 2 adorable nephews) and while I really enjoy having them come and visit, let's face it, Fibro and Family do not always go hand in hand. Cleaning the house for them to come over is a must for me and that is tiring. Then there is cooking - and when you have that many family members, that requires planning too. While ordering in or going out to eat is easier, it isn't always financially possible and finding places that serve foods that meet the new Healthy standards of many of my family members is tough too. Don't get me wrong, I love that my brothers and sisters are looking to be more healthy too, but it does make eating out nearly impossible. Then there is the long hours of playing with the nephews and my child running around and then the after guest clean up. WOW, I am getting tired just reliving it to write this post and earlier this week I flat out crashed because I over exerted myself and it took THREE DAYS for me to feel normal again.

Thankfully though all my personal research into finding healthy meals that are Fibro friendly, made the meal planning of this particular visit sooooooo easy!! I work full time and right now I have an hour drive from my job to get home, so I was determined to find meals that are healthy and EASY. Mexican food is my absolute favorite so I get really excited when I find recipes that meet all my requirements - Healthy, Easy, and Delicious.

For my family visit, I made a super easy, amazingly delicious, Baked Chicken and Roasted Red Pepper Taquitos served with homemade guacamole and low fat sour cream. I was able to cook my chicken while I vacuumed the carpets and prep time was so minimal that I got to spend lots of time with my family and not in the kitchen. The 15 min bake time also ensured that everyone got to eat at a reasonable hour and the clean up was minimal. How much more could you want? So check this out!!

Baked Chicken and Roasted Red Pepper Taquitos
Yields 12 Taquitos
  • 3 chicken breasts (cooked & shredded)
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 6 green onions (chopped)
  • 1 roasted red pepper (peeled & diced)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or Mexican blend)
  • 12 flour taco tortillas
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 425F. Heat a large skillet to medium heat add the chicken and season with the cumin, cayenne pepper, black pepper and salt.
  2. Once the chicken is evenly coated in seasonings, add the chicken broth and green onions. Cook until the chicken broth is fully cooked off (about 5 minutes) then mix in the roasted red peppers.
  3. Heat the tortillas in a paper towel in the microwave until soft (about 15 seconds).
  4. Fill each tortilla with 2 tbsp cheese and about 1/4 cup of chicken mixture, roll up and place fold-side down on a greased baking sheet.
  5. Bake the taquitos at 425F until golden (about 15 minutes), flipping after 10 minutes.
  6. Serve with guacamole and salsa.

I know that having Fibromyalgia is really tough and not everyone has the supportive family that I do, however, regardless of how supportive they are or aren't, I strongly suggest that you put forth the effort to maintain a strong family element. They are not going to always understand 100% what you are going through, how you feel, or even care, but consider that that road goes the other way too. They will experience things in life that you don't understand or agree with but I speak from experience that its not always about them understanding, sometimes its just about the relationship and being there when they need you to the best of your ability. It is heartbreaking to me when I see families that cannot support each other - mostly because my siblings and I are very close despite our very different life paths and decisions.

We may not be able to do everything that they can, or participate as long a they do, but making an effort to do what we can will go a very long way. It is hard to look past our own difficulties and the pain we are constantly in, but its better to do what you can than to sit back and later in life regret what you didn't do.

Making the changes I have in my life, the exercise, the USANA supplements, a healthy diet, even consistent psychotherapy has made a HUGE difference in both my ability to DO things with my child and my family but it has also changed my OUTLOOK on life.Yes I am able to more but I also no longer beat myself up when there are days I can't. I am not cured, I still have days of intense pain, I still struggle with fatigue, and the brain fog periodically gets more than a little frustrating, but I am loving my new HAPPY and HEALTHY lifestyle.

Friendly Reminder!

I know its rather late in the evening for me to be posting but I have spent most of the day outside with my daughter just having a blast. Unfortunately, I was rudely reminded that there are a few absolute MUSTS when it comes to Summer Fun and wanted to share so we can all have an amazing summer!

#1 - Sunscreen
I am a redhead naturally so I have fair skin to boot. Therefore, sunscreen is a must! Remember though that just applying it once will not last all day. It is necessary to reapply every 2-3 hours especially if you are getting sweaty or playing in or around water.

#2 - Water Safety
Speaking of water, please remember that it only takes 6 inches of water to drown and often times we get to having so much fun in the pool or talking to our friends while enjoying the rays that we don't always pay attention to those around us. There was a kid today at our pool who was drowning and if the parents hadn't seen an reacted so quickly it could have been tragic. Keep an eye on children when they are in the water and discourage them from "fake drowning" and "crying wolf" - that way when there really is a problem, people will react appropriately.

#3 - Fire Safety
Like all good Southerns, I love me a good BarB-Q with friends, food, drinks, and all that meat on the grill but again, we cannot leave our kiddos unsupervised around the grills or open flames. My daughter is a pyro and will put anything and everything in a fire to watch it burn if we let her - honestly most children are this way. Whether playing ball, running races or playing tag, or even filling their plates with delicious goodies, keep the kiddos away from the open flames and hot surfaces so that accidental burns don't ruin the good times.

#4 - HYDRATE
Temperatures are going up, we are going to be outside more, we sweat more, and therefore our bodies are loosing electrolytes and nutrients right and left. Drink lots of fluids and no beer, alcohol, sodas, and mainstream energy drinks do not count. Water is the best, but keep Gatorade, Coconut Water, or even fresh lemon water available to keep the body functioning the way it should and the fun can go on. Know the signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion and have a back up plan for getting family and friends safely cooled down if they do start to over heat.

As a fibro fighter I find that I am way more susceptible to heat exhaustion and dehydrate very quickly...oddly enough, I dont sweat much either which is a major factor in my inability to be out in the sun for long periods of time. But I dont want MY disability to inhibit my daughter from having all the summer fun she can handle. Therefore, I make sure that I am constantly drinking water, I wear big floppy hats to keep the sun off my face, stay in the shade as much as possible, and when it is hotter I avoid any kind of strenuous activity - even walking. However, that does not mean running yourself into the dirt so you kiddo can have fun. Sometimes it is necessary to go indoors and chill for a while. Let them know that it is in their best interest too so that they can have the energy to continue having fun once you have recuperated for a while. Sit down and read together, play a board game, or just catch a home movie. Remember, its about quality not quantity. So let's have lots of fun this summer, be safe, and create lots of amazing memories that you will share for years to come!

Will USANA Cure my Fibromyalgia?

Hey friend! I am trying very hard to be more active on my blog and have been brainstorming things that would be helpful for fibro fighters, parents, professionals, or anyone looking to be Happy and Healthy alike. So look for changes in the near future! I am excited!

However, I am not just a blogger. I do actually looks at the stats for my blog to see where on this beautiful planet the people who view my blog live, what platforms they are reading from so I can use appropriate fonts and picture sizes, and what key word searches bring people to my blog. Earlier this week I noticed that a viewer who came to my page had searched "Will USANA cure my fibromyalgia" and because I wanted to have a response that was both accurate and in compliance with the regulations of the FTC and FDA, I took some extra time mulling over how I would present my thoughts on this search.

First, no, USANA products and supplements will not CURE our fibromyalgia. Until they find the end all, be all CAUSE of fibro there is very little chance that they will find an actual cure. In trauma medicine we say, you cant stop the bleeding till you find the wound. RESET Results

Ok, wow! I am so sorry that this did not post on Saturday the way it was SUPPOSED to - I guess thats what I get for trying to use a new tablet with a funny word processor to compose and post my blogs. I could see it so I assumed everyone else could too - so please accept my appologies for the severe delay in posting these results.

I could not be more excited or proud of myself and I think that my RESET was a HUGE success. Last Homework Assignment - USANA Audit

I still cannot believe that I have finally graduated college and I am really looking forward to the new and exciting things I can do with my time. After spending some time yesterday with other USANA associates and telling them about the papers that I had written, many of which use USANA as a the basis for my research, they requested that I post them so they could see what I had learned during my studies. As with my paper from late last year, the blog post entitled 'A True Entrepreneur', this is a final project submitted to Colorado Technical University were I obtained my degree. This one was the very last paper I wrote and was for my Auditing class. It provides the basis of what all publicly traded companies go through during an annual audit and focuses specifically on the Internal Controls and practices of USANA Health Sciences. The "Independent Audit Report" at the end of the paper is purely fictional as I was responsible to also present an audit report for my class and has NOTHING to do with official company audits. If nothing else, I hope that this allow you to see this fabulous company from a completely different perspective - one from an outsider scrutinizing the viability of the company's financials and how they maintain compliance with the numerous federal agencies that govern how a publicly traded company operates and reports income.


USANA Audit
When a company is publicly traded, they must have their financial statements and business practices audited on a yearly basis to verify compliance with the Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP).  But this can still be a frustrating and stressful event as all of the company’s financials, management practices, legal and compliance activities, and internal controls come under scrutiny to ensure that they accurately and efficiently illustrate the operations and health of the company.
USANA Health Sciences is a publicly traded company based out of Salt Lake City, Utah that for the last 20 years has focused on providing the general public a pharmaceutical grade, science based, all-natural, skin care, dietary, and nutritional supplement line grossing nearly $600 Million during the 2013 fiscal year (Yahoo, 2014). During the first quarter of the 2014 fiscal year the company reached a monumental mile stone as they topped $2.5 billion in total commissions paid to their associates and their stock values reaching the record high of $70.45 per share (Alaniz, 2014). Because the company provides a product that is consumable, it is held responsible for maintaining the highest level of manufacturing codes as well as meeting requirements for the manufacturing of nutritional supplements as dictated by the FDA. As a Network Marketing Company, they are also regulated by the laws regarding multilevel marketing and advertising regulations outlined by the Federal Trade Commission. USANA Health Sciences has 19 international markets necessitating that they maintain international distribution trade and tariffs compliance as well. With so many different elements of human interaction, product manufacturing and distribution, client, associate, and employee accounts, extensive technology use, numerous charity programs, as well as the physical facilities used by the company, there are many aspects that an auditor would want to review. To begin the process the auditors will begin by identifying the areas of highest risk in the company.
As with all business activities, there is a certain amount of risk involved in auditing the company’s financial statements and business practices.  Audit risk is the term utilized to describe the possibility that the auditor will not discover errors or fraudulent activities while reviewing a company or individual’s financial statements due to inappropriate testing or careful masking by the company.  These risks can be associated with the assessment of actual financial materials or associated with the assertions produced by the evaluation of financial statements (Rittenberg & Johnstone, 2011).  However, there are many steps that a company can take to mitigate or minimize the possibility of activities or situations occurring that could produce the misstatement of company financials or procedures.
The first step in determining the best route to mitigating audit risks is to identify the areas within the company where risk is more likely to be prevalent.  Risk areas can include IT or technology areas, project management functions, organizational procedures, financial practices, compliance regulations, and external factors (Edmead, 2007).  While external risks include factors outside of the company’s control such as natural disasters, there are still ways to plan for and minimize the amount of impact it could potentially have on the company.  To minimize the risk in areas which the company can control they may want to utilize selective information sharing that is specific to job descriptions, thus minimizing the possibility of information lacking necessary security or being used improperly.  There should also be an established set of internal controls which create a specific set of guidelines for how job processes should be executed, who has accessed to controlled information, and steps to be taken in the event that situations arise where more detailed procedural analysis is necessary. Unfortunately it is not possible to eliminate all risks and therefore those areas that pose a potential threat should be analyzed and controls put in place to bring it to an acceptable risk level. This represents the value of human or material loss from industry processes that are considered tolerable by society and authorities within the confines of social, political, and economic cost benefit analysis (Business, 2014).
When auditing any company, the auditor will want to focus more attention on the accounts where misstatements are most likely to occur and where the company seems to be more vulnerable. Auditors of the financial statements will look at the accounts that are directly linked to the cash cycle – specifically the accounts payables, inventory assets, and accounts receivables. Utilizing the information provided in previous audits, current accounting records, and the company’s policies and procedures, they are going to look specifically for accountability and transparency of all levels of management and compliance with all policies specific to the separation of duties. A weakness in any of these areas will trigger a more in-depth and extensive scrutiny of the company’s financial records. Because it is the cash cycle that will be under review, the auditors will look at the accounts payables to ensure that there are procedures for purchasing, receiving, and payment. Inspection of the Inventory accounts requires that steps are in place to verify and process orders, shipping and receiving of products, verification of products, and steps to account for raw materials used during manufacturing processes. The accounts receivables are a significant player in the cash cycle and should also be reviewed for effective order processing, shipping, billing, and payment receipt practices.
Accounts payable is the largest of the liability accounts and can be a significant indication of the company’s financial health. In large companies, like USANA, purchases are made against lines of credit with payment term that have been agreed to by both parties. When liabilities are past due or even excessive, there is a possibility that the company’s cash flows are not on par with the products being purchased and that there may be issues in other departments as well. When the auditors look at the Accounts Payables for the company, they want to see that the purchases were logged in the appropriate transaction period and that the presentation and disclosure of the liability are agreeable (AP, n.d.). This is important for verifying that the quarterly earnings and expenses are properly evaluated and that they have been expensed to the appropriate accounts on the financial statements. Auditors will also look to ensure that the liabilities are valid expenses, a product that is in line with the company’s operations, and that the purchases were priced according to market value (AP, n.d.). Orders for items not used in any of the company projects or processes should raise flags as should bills for items that exceed market value as this could be an indicator of a toxic or illegal business relationship or money syphoning. In order to test for these occurrences, the auditors will ask to review Purchase Agreements with vendors in order to build a better understanding of the terms of the business agreement, product prices and any associated fees, as well as payment terms.  They may also request Purchase Orders to ensure there are controls for procurement and authorization of purchases, Receipt Logs that show that the items orders were actually received, and finally, proof of payment for the order (AP, n.d.). Failure to produce any of these documents could indicate an area where the company many need to be reworked or made more efficient.
Inventory accounts typically represent the company’s largest asset account and because it is in constant motion with product being brought in and sold again, there needs to be efficient inventory controls to minimize the possibility of excessive inventory or the need for inventory adjustments in the General Ledgers. USANA not only markets numerous products but they manufacture all of them as well and therefore auditors will be looking not only at the inventory of products ready for sale but also at the raw materials acquisitioned for the manufacturing process. Some of the processes that are audited in inventory are warehouse cutoff procedures, which allows warehouse managers to get their receipts logged in a timely fashion to allow for accurate quarterly reports, as well as the methods used for inventory counts as changes in these methods could lead to a significant different in values between reporting periods. If processes have changed, the auditors will want to see reasons for the changes as well as any documentation that will support the reconciliations made in the ledgers (Inventory, 2014). Inventory in transit, item costs, freight costs, and inventory allowances will also be evaluated when auditing inventory value because they affect the full value of inventory. During the audit of Inventory, documents like Purchase Orders and Bills of Ladings are used to track raw materials as they are received while Manufacturing Orders and Bills of Manufacturing track how much of each raw material has been slated for the production line. After the products complete the manufacturing process it is necessary for the warehouses to have Inventory Receipts for the finished product being added to the inventory that is ready for shipment. When companies manufacture their own products, they will want to have a pre-determined inventory allowance to allocate what is an acceptable loss of product during the manufacturing process. Having numerous inventory adjustment due to product loss could alert the auditing team to issues with the effectiveness of the manufacturing processes or with the way that inventory is being moved from one inventory area to another or even issues with plant security.
            The Accounts Receivables are representative of the company’s sales and projected income for the company. Some companies operate on a cash basis and will not have a significant amount of funds, if any, tied up in this account. Despite the representation of sales that have occurred, the Accounts Receivables will also indicate which accounts have still not issued payment for the goods or services that they received. As with the Accounts Payables, these accounts will be compared with previous period records and the industry averages to ensure that they are within acceptable levels. When auditing the receivables accounts, the auditor will look first for evidence that the sale actually occurred and will want purchases order or invoice with the client’s information, the product and its unit price, and the invoice total clearly annotated. On USANA’s invoices the client can not only see the date the order was placed and processed, the products listed individually with either their unit price or case price beside it as they will ship both ways, but all costs associated with the chosen method of shipment and payment receipt details as well. While this is very convenient for the customer, the auditors will want to see more than just the invoice to validate that the sale actually occurred. Some auditors will choose to contact clients to verify that the sale and the amount of the receivable matches their records however, if the receivable is comprised of numerous small accounts, they may choose to forgo this process if there is no clear indication that the bill will not be paid (AR, nd.).  Shipping logs are used to verify that the orders went out in a timely fashion and check stubs or payment receipts are attached to the invoices to show that the sale was complete. Auditors will also look at the company’s return policy and the sales and return allowances to analyze what portion of the company sales are being sent back and that they are being properly annotated on the financial statements. Extensive Aging Reports could indicate that the company has a problem with obtaining payment for their services or that there is a problem with the return policy and the reimbursement of funds to the customer. Not always by any fault of their own, most companies will be required at some point to write off an account as bad debt but because of the nature of the account, is likely to come under close scrutiny by the auditors as it would be very easy for an individual to write off an account as bad debt and then pocket the payment for themselves. When Accounts have been moved to bad debt, the auditors will want to see that sufficient attempts were made to reconcile the receivable, the account went through the appropriate authorizations before being written off, and may also choose to contact the client to verify that the account was indeed written off (AR, n.d). By comparing the bad debt accounts to the Aging Account Summery the auditors can also determine how much of the current aging accounts are likely to be written off as well.
When an auditor gives an opinion on the company’s financial records, they are inferring that all transaction recorded during the past fiscal year have been processed correctly from start to finish. Testing every client and vendor transaction that took place, especially in a multi-million dollar company, would be time consuming and impractical and there is still a possibility of something important being overlooked. In order to obtain a clear picture of the company’s financials, what processes are in place, and to test individual accounts for the possibility of misstatements, auditors will employ a test ratio known as Sampling. Audit sampling is the application of an audit process to a population of a transaction class or account, with the purpose of evaluating the application of internal controls. The population of sampling is typically less than 100% of the class or account variables but must still present an accurate representation of the account as a whole (AICPA, 2014). While it would be easier to audit smaller variables with fewer transactions, these transactions may not be typical to the company or even representative of the volume of inventory that is moved in each transaction and therefore should not be used as the basis for a test sample. Because USANA has 19 unique international markets, three manufacturing plants, and a few select third-party vendors, the auditors will want to look beyond the records and practices of the home office in Utah to ensure that the internal controls are being employed throughout the numerous layers of the organization. When sampling for the accounts payables, the auditors will need to look at payables that relate to the third party manufactures, raw material vendors, as well as those relating to general operations of the facilities. They may choose to contact these groups to verify the shipments, price and products, as well as payment of the account. Population samples for inventory accounts would include documentation for acquisition of raw materials, allocation and movement of raw materials to production, and then the finalized products to staging areas for shipment. Because manufactured products are warehoused in certain locations throughout the international markets, auditors will want to compare warehouse inventories to shipping logs to ensure that inventory valuations are true representations of what actually exist within the company. Sampling the Accounts Receivables for USANA would be a vast undertaking as they reported 265,000 active associates and 78,000 preferred customers in 2013 (USANA, 2014). Therefore, the auditor would choose to take a sample population from each of the international markets to test for order receipts, shipping orders, and payment receipts. Given that the majority of USANA’s transactions occur in on-line marketplaces they will want to test the security measures for these accounts as well as the information itself. When sending out confirmations to vendors and clients the auditor will want to get a 100% confirmation of the accounts. However, the likelihood of this occurring is not guaranteed and therefore they will look to get an 80-90% return on their inquiries.
            Audits are time consuming, expensive, and sometimes aggravating for the company’s employees even though they know they are necessary. Some companies however, are privately owned or very small and do not require a full audit of their financial statement. In lieu of this, they may opt to have a review or compilation performed instead. In full audits however there are two levels of assurance that have been outlined by the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB). A reasonable assurance level is given to audits which have gone more in-depth into the company’s financial records and the auditor is willing to express a formal conclusion about the outcome of the evaluation and its supporting evidence. These assurances are always issued to third parties to validate specific criteria, and the measurements done on them, that were specified either in the audit framework or during a previous audit as being an area that posed significant risk. These opinions, criteria, and documentation are presented to the user in a formal report that validates a reasonable assurance of the information presented. Conversely though is a limited assurance level which requires less work and time, but often leads to higher risk levels or even a negative assurance because sufficient testing of the financial statements has not been performed. Some companies may choose to start with a limited assurance audit and then escalate to a reasonable assurance level if the preliminary audit indicates issues that require more in-depth testing (Rittenberg & Johnstone, 2011).
            Many of the risks that auditors test for are directly related to the types and effectiveness of the company’s internal controls and can encompass anything from lost, altered, or incorrectly recorded transactions, improperly valued transactions, or even transactions that are have no correlation with the company’s operations. By having a solid set of internal controls in place, a company can minimize the chance that these kinds of situations might occur. Segregation of Duties and Authorization Procedures are two of the more important internal controls as these ensure that decisions are made by the appropriate individuals and that those that have access to and are handling certain information are qualified to do so (Rittenberg & Johnstone, 2011). By having different individuals responsible for the processing of transactions and the physical management of the accounts minimizes the possibility that fictitious payments being issued or entries being made to cover up other fraudulent activities. For example, the person who writes the checks should not be the same as the person who signs them. Internal controls also require that there is adequate documentation that the transactions are authorized by the appropriate management chains and that they were executed in a timely fashion (Rittenberg & Johnstone, 2011). This documentation should also include any communications between the customer and company regarding the order and any changes that were made to the initial transaction. Equally important to making sure that only qualified individuals have access to certain information are the internal controls that are in place to physically safeguard client information and company assets (Rittenberg & Johnstone, 2011). These kinds of controls can be as complicated as close circuit security cameras and guards, to magnetic key card locks on secure areas, to computer access code, to the simple filing cabinet in the HR department. They do not have to fancy or expensive as long as they are effective. The last internal control that is specific to the financial statements is the recording of account reconciliations. It is important for these entries to be put in by someone other than the person who made the initial entries as this would be an opportune time to cover up intentional misstatements of the company’s assets and expenses (Rittenberg & Johnstone, 2011).
In their 2013 Financial Statement report, the USANA directors note the importance of having a strong set of internal controls but admits that no matter how well structured the set of internal controls are, there are inherent limitations to how much or the kinds of misstatements they catch. The Board of Directors at USANA assert that their internal controls are “designed to provide reasonable assurance regarding the reliability of financial reporting and the preparation of the Company’s financial statements for external purposes in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles”. The financial statements also indicate that the internal controls are reviewed on an annual basis and that at the time that the report was issued, the controls were operating effectively with respect to the criteria and guideline issued by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO). The report also states that there were no changes made to the USANA internal controls during the 2013 fiscal year (USANA, 2014). One of the most notable of USANA’s security measures is in the level of security associated with their online services, with associates and customers have access to different information tailored to their participation in the company, and each user requiring a unique and protected log-in. While certain amounts of payment information is stored in the user profile, on a regular basis the user has to revalidate the card “on file” which minimizes the possibility of credit card fraud.

RESET Day 5

Wow I cant believe that I finally made it to Day 5 of my RESET and must say that I feel amazing!! Despite being tempted by  cheesecake and pizza at work, I was able to focus on making healthy snack choices and now those cravings for greasy hamburgers and cheese dips have completely diminished. I managed to face down my desire to get on the scale and am so excited about my weigh-in and measurements tomorrow! i even managed to walk at least 2 miles every day even though my fibro was giving me fits and my right leg was being less than cooprrative. But that is not the greatest of my successes during this week.

Losing weight is cool, killing cravings even better, but the strengthening to my self-control and determination is absolutely astounding! The feeling of knowing that I can tell my body what it needs to be healthy and stick to my resolve to reaching those goals is completely glorious. The most libertating feeling in the world is knowing that once again I am in control of my body, my health, and my destiny. My cravings, my bad habits, and most importantly my fibromyalgia will not dictate what happens in my life.

Some people may think its crazy that a 5 day "cleanse" can have this kind of impact but I assure you that I do not exagerate! It takes 21 days to build a new habit but only 5 to give you the drive to turn that habit into a lifestyle that lasts forever.

RESET Day 3 & 4

Sorry I missed posting yesterday but it was a wee bit crazy around the house. My daughter had her post-op follow ups with her surgeons and the gastroenterologist and they were very pleased with how well she has healed and enjoyed hearing that she has successfully transitioned from Miralax to the all natural USANA Fibergy and has been staying regular and the nausea has eased. Then it was my turn and got to rush from one end of the Metroplex to the other to see my doctors down at the VA. I love how they respect that I don't want more chemical pills to "treat" my illnesses but am more intereste in alternative forms of treatments. Given that both of my care providers are from the Far East, they are very open to this way of thinking.

So far my RESET has been going really well and this evening I added 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice to my French Vanilla Nutrimeal and am enjoying a nice lemon cream shake. I love just about anything lemon. 

The hardest part of building a healthy lifestyle and eating habits for me is that I am a terrible snacker! I get the munchies so bad and embarrassingly enough that's mostly do to my having sucked my thumb till I was 15 and now have a ridiculous need to always have something to chew on. Most of the time a piece if sugar free gum helps but sometimes that won't even kill the urge to indulge in a bag of peanut M&Ms or a bag of salty snacks.

This is why I keep carefully measured little snack bags of almonds, banana chips, and raisins, as well as lots of prepared veggies to reach for whenever the urge strikes. When it's something sweet I'm craving a super healthy, low glycemic, unbelievably delicious USANA Snack Bar offers the sugary pleasure I desire and 18 grams of protein to keep me running strong.

My favorite snack for literally whenever is a fresh cucumber/onion salad tossed in vinegar, water, sugar, salt, and pepper. This fresh chilled treat offers me the crunchy texture I desire, the fresh healthy factor I need, and the satisfaction of being able to enjoy snacking without worrying about undoing all my hard work to making healthier choices.

Having chips and chocolate shouldn't be eliminated from your diet in their entirety because these are things that we enjoy. Just enjoy them in moderation and plan on making a few other modifications to your food intake that day or increase the activity so that chocolate doesn't decide to take up residence where it shouldn't.

As a Fibromite and a woman, chocolate can be my best friend and worst enemy but I can usually keep it at bay with a Dutch Chocolate Shake or a Fudgy Delighg Snack Bar....but sometimes a small bag of dark chocolate peanut M&Ms is just was the doctor ordered. 

Snacking isn't bad, just remember to make good choices just like with our meals. Moderation is the key!

RESET Day 2!

Well, this is day two of my 5 day RESET challenge and challenge might be putting it nicely. This morning I had to fight what I know will be a daily battle for me and ignore the burning desire to weigh myself. My biggest challenge on my journey to being Happy and Healthy is my constant battle with the scale.

For many years I have qualified myself and my worth by the number on the scale and even though I know how unhealthy this is, it continues to be an issue for me. I am constantly tempted to get on the scale to see how much I have lost because I feel that "beauty" is defined by some preconceived number that I will find there. Even worse is that because of my medical training, I know how inaccurate this number can be because our bodies, especially the female body, fluctuate in weight due to hormones and water retention. Additionally, as someone who enjoys working out and weight lifting, I have to remember that this will also cause weight fluctuations. Muscle is more dense than fat and therefore, building muscle will cause my weight loss to slow significantly. The up side of building muscle is that it uses more energy than fat and will actually facilitate the body's elimination of fat buildup.

On our journey to being Happy and Healthy, we need to remember that we are so much more than that number on the scale. We are beautiful individuals with our own unique stories, past experiences, and the most amazing genetic codes. While shedding pounds will help us to look better it is more important to focus on what that weight loss really means. The steps that we take to loosing those pounds are the building blocks to a healthy lifestyle and those changes will lead to improved health and a better quality of life. This is what should drive our need for change - to be a better and healthier me.

Many who suffer Fibromyalgia will have a harder time shedding the pounds that our lack of activity and medications have caused us to gain simply because our systems function inefficiently and slower than the average person. Additionally, many of the anti-inflammatory drugs that we take so we can function, keep the pounds hanging around (unfortunately, as much as I know about medications, I cannot adequately explain why this is).

But don't let that be the reason you remain inactive. Get up and walk. Find Chair Exercises on YouTube and get those muscles moving. Since I sit at a desk most of the day, I have started taking short walks around the block on my breaks to get the blood flowing, burn a few calories, and work the kink out of my stiff joints. This is just 10 minutes of exercise, twice a day and wow can I feel the difference.

My challenge for you, is to ignore the scale, focus on making healthy choices, and enjoy the changes in your body as they come about. We are so much more, more beautiful, more unique, more dynamic than that number on the scale. Let us take the steps to being Happy and Healthy for that is true beauty.

RESET Day 1!

Hey Friends!! I am finally back! But I have also finished my degree and have decided that I will take a few years before getting my Masters and focus on my daughter, my health, and my USANA business.

The worst part about the amount of stress that I have been under in the past few months is I let my health go, my diet went to hell, and I stopped working out all together. My fibromyalgia has been running overtime and the pain and migraines are worse than ever. Most shameful to admit...was how much WEIGHT I put on!

I know that I was eating very poorly, hitting the fast food places on my way home, snacking while I was studying, and drinking enough soda to float a small battleship. Since its more than a little embarrising, let's just say that I BALOONED! It has been so very depressing to say the very least.

But I have so much determination and I know that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to, so starting last week, I am making one change a week in my journey to becoming Happy and Healthy.

First let me say that there is NO shame in "falling off the wagon" and going back to unhealthy habits because, let's face it, no one is perfect and we are all going to do it at least once. Especially when we are just starting on our journey. I know for me my Fibro didnt help either becuase I was just too tired and in too much pain to be cooking after working an 8 hour day and being up half the night before doing homework. What matters is that we acknolodge that we have slipped and take the steps to make it right.

For me that means a USANA 5 day RESET program that is designed to help my body to detox out all the bad junk in my system that also cause many of the bad cravings, boost my energy levels, and kickstart my metabolism to ramp up my weight loss once again. It's so simple because the three shakes a day can be complimented by a tasty USANA snack bar or fresh veggies and the weight just falls off. But even more importantly, it is a strong foundation for me to build my healthy lifestyle on. Getting the right kinds of carbs, fats, and sugars to feed my cells and help my body to function the way it was built to.

Change doesn't happen overnight. Change isn't easy. Last week it was giving up sodas, this week it's my RESET, and next week it's focusing on reintroducing my fibro body to daily workout routines. Trying to make too many changes at a time only sets us up for failure. Find one thing to focus on at a time and let that one thing drive you and carry you through the tough times and when you know you are ready, add another. And always feel welcome to share your journey or difficulties here because I can assure you that here, you are not alone. Let us make this journey together!

Antibiotics or Probiotics


I love this little meme but in all honesty it represents an argument that I have heard come up many many times with avid supporters of both sides. Since this blog represents my personal humble opinion, which is based on personal medical knowledge and experience, research, thoughts, and opinions - I am going to weigh in on this topic myself.

Very short back story here: My little girl, who is only six, just went through lathroscopic surgery on her intestines because after a CAT Scan with contrast showed that she was not only experiencing bowel blockage but that there was a large mass in her small intestines. Now that we are home recovering (poor thing is also having to do an at-home colon cleanse - which I will leave for a later post) I have been hearing an awful lot of the Probiotics vs Antibiotics and which one she needs to be taking.

So here is my opinion - BOTH!! Our bodies need BOTH! 

Now here's the logic behind my reasoning. Bear with me a few minutes.

First: Bacteria is all around us and even inside us.
Second: There are as many GOOD bacteria as there are BAD bacteria
Third: We need a decent balance of BOTH bacteria in order to maintain proper health (a yen and yang so to speak - the good balancing the bad)

Our body's immune system, as surprising as this may seem, is largely dependent on the overall heath of our gut. This is because it is our stomach, colon and intestines, liver and kidneys, that are responsible for extracting the nutrients our bodies need from the foods we eat and then eliminate the toxins and waste from our systems in the most obvious methods possible. When any one of these organs fails to function efficiently, then our bodies will be deprived of the nutrients we need an will be unable to maintain itself effectively.

So where does the bacteria come in? Right! Because our gut if FULL of bacteria - the kind that help to break down and absorb nutrients and then eliminate the waste!

By introducing PRObiotics to our systems, we are improving the GOOD bacteria in our guts and they keep us running....smoothly. However, sometimes ANTIbiotics are necessary because infections, whether they are sinus, respiratory, dermal, or even lymphatic, have ensued from the sudden growth of BAD bacteria.

The Conundrum: Antibiotics will not only destroy the BAD bacteria but additionally they will kill off the GOOD bacteria too.

The Answer: Taking regular doses of PRObiotics will maximize our body's natural defenses against foreign or harmful bacteria but when the body is weakened by a BACTERIAL infection (the common cold -the rinovirus or the flu - the influenza virus are NOT bacterial and antiBIOTICS will not help them) then it would be beneficial to the body to take the 7-10 day dose of antibiotics to clear out the bad bacteria while AT THE SAME TIME continuing the probiotics to get the good bacteria levels back up and the immune system functioning at the highest level again (this could also minimize the possibility of yeast infections that often occur with antibiotics because the bacteria that eliminate yeast has been killed off....are we seeing the pattern here?)

So in short, I am a huge proponent of both probiots and antibotics - when they are used in the way they are intended and that the user understand the purpose and limitations of both. Since I have started using USANA's 100% natural probiotics and fiber supplements regularly, I have noticed that the IBS, which is associated with my fibromyalgia, has stabilized and I have managed to create a regular routine if you get my drift...talk about a relief! I have seen a significant decrease in other annoying issues too - like my seasonal allergies, acid reflux, even ACNE! Who would have thought....not me.



Again, all medical conditions, questions, and the use of supplements should be directed to your medical care provider before any major changes take place. I am not a doctor and do not have all the answers. I can only offer incite based on my knowledge of pharmacy and personal experiences with Fibromyalgia and the joys of living with it.

Working with Fibromyalgia

Greetings my wonderful friends!!

It is so wonderful to come back here and see that so many people are continuing to follow my page and my journey to being Happy and Healthy.

I have to admit that it has been a very long several weeks and I am struggling more than usual with my Fibromyalgia. As I look over the past several posts I made, I can see that I have been struggling for longer than I originally thought. In light of my increasing frequency and severity of migraines in addition to constant Fibro flairs, I had a conference with several of my most trusted friends and family members about my job and how I felt that it was integral to my steady decline in health.

A common theme among Fibro Fighters is how they find that it is very hard to function in the work world largely due to the pain and constant fatigue caused by the disease. Now I am huge proponent of having a job for two reasons - first, it gives a sense of purpose and that can be hugely bolstering when you feel that you have little or no control in your life and second, it builds a consistency for you and that consistency can help significantly in learning to pace yourself while dealing with the pain. The key to being happy with your job is to have a job doing something you love; something that makes you truly happy.

I love accounting and I am good at it which for some time now has been the only reason that I have continued at my job despite being less and less civil with the owner of the company. Accounting makes me happy but I realized that I truly dreaded going to work and that once I got there I would almost instantly feel aggressive, agitated, and aloof - none of which is conducive to a productive work environment.

In light of all of this, I made the determination that my toxic work environment is hurting me more than it is helping the bank account and I gave my boss notice that I would be leaving. I gave him enough time to hire someone to replace me and additional time for me to train them. Even though I know there is an end in site, I don't find much comfort in that knowledge.

I know that many of us need to have a job to make ends meet, take care of our families, and pay for our medical bills, but it is my strong council that if you are completely miserable with your job then there is no amount of medication, meditation, or massage that is going to bring your pain levels down or your emotional state up. I encourage you, if you are struggling with working with Fibromyalgia, to sit down with you managers and see if there are things that you can work out that might minimize your pain or stress levels. If they cannot accommodate your disabilities and you are thinking of looking for a new job, sit down, be honest with yourself, and outline what it is about your job that makes your Fibro flair. Do you have a rotating schedule? This often creates physical strain on the body. Are you a manager? This level of responsibility increases stress levels which can burden the immune system. Do you spend all day on your feet or sitting in front of a computer? Knowing if the ergonomic environment could be increasing your discomfort levels could help you to decide what suggestions you could make to management or in looking for a new job.

Find something that you love and you will never work a day in your life.

Building a healthy lifestyle is not just about what we eat, its about how we think and how we spend our time. Its a hard decision to leave my job because it does create a certain level of uncertainty but I will take a little time to allow my body to heal and in that time look for a position that allows me to do what I love but preferably without the massive amount of responsibility that being a manager requires.

When you feel overwhelmed, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and picture a place where you could feel relaxed. Trick your mind and body into letting go of some of that negative energy and bring in healing light. And above all - Be Happy, Be Healthy!
